ABOUT
POVLJA |
 |
|
In
the season 2003 Povlja were declared the most beautiful
destination in the category of smaller places according
to Radio Station “Split” and Tourist Board
of the Dalmatian region
Povlja
is a little place in Dalmatia, at the north east side
of the island of Braè, one of the most beautiful
islands, an intact pearl of the Adriatic sea.
The
place is crowded with interesting monuments, while most
of them originate from the 5th century. The most famous
are «Povaljski prag» and «Povaljska listina». “Povaljski
prag” is one of the oldest and most important epigraphic
monuments in Croatian Cyrillic, and “Povaljska listina”
is the oldest preserved paper written in Croatian language,
in Cyrillic. It is important to mention the remains
of basilica from the 5th century. Basilica is in good
condition. In Povlja, you can also find octagonal baptismal
font, the only one existing in Croatia today. |
There
are 310 inhabitants in Povlja today. Most of them still
live of fishing, olive growing and wine growing. This
is why Povlja’s nature still has its original colouring.
Clean air, beautiful sea and intact environment are what
make Povlja your ideal choice for vacation. You
can find something for everybody; numerous inlets, long
promenades and cultural monuments, including famous
Dalmatian cuisine, frutti di mare, good vine and nice
companionship with traditional music, finishing with
the unforgettable night entertainment.
Povlja
offers you numerous daily activities. Diving school,
gondolas riding, surfing, gliding, scooters and excursion
boats, soccer field, will please even those with the
highest expectations.
Give
yourself up to the shining sun, wonderful beaches and
the sea, and enjoy. Povlja will take care of everything
else.

ZLATNI
RAT
Situated
in a secluded place, on the southern coast of Brac, Bol
is the oldest town of Brac and one of the most famous
seaside resorts of the Adriatic. Apart from cultural monuments,
Bol also features a number of natural beauties. East and
west of Bol are numerous shores, beautiful beaches; the
most famous - and probably the most beautiful on the Adriatic
- is Zlatni Rat. |
A
story has it that this is the only beach in the world
that runs vertical to the coast. Bol has a years-long
tradition in tourism. To those who are keen on sports
and recreation Bol offers 25 tennis courts, the central
court having 1,820 seats. This is also the venue of
top-class tennis tournaments (WTA Croatian Bol Ladies
Open).

VID'S
MOUNTAIN
is
the highest mountain of all Adriatic islands (778 m
above the sea). The name of the mountain derives form
the church st. Vid that used to tower up at the top
of the mountain, but today, unfortunately, it lies in
ruins.
The
basis of the north wall can be seen as well as the part
of the semicircle apse. The church was built in the
13th or 14th century. From the top of the mountain,
where there is a little house with the inn, stone-made
tables and benches for rest, you can have a unique view
towards the south. The closest island is the island
of Vis. During the nice weather you can see the other
islands and mountain Biokovo, all the way from the Pelješac
peninsula in the east, across the island of Korèula,
Vis, Biševo, to the far distanced steep rock Jabuka.

BLACA
DESERT
used
to be a famous glagolic desert, raised up the high,
steep cliff. Today, Blaca is one of the most beautiful
vacation resorts in Braè. It is situated at the east
hillside of the long valley in the south of the island,
between Bol and Milna. In the 16th century Glagolitic
priests established Blaca. Little Blaca Desert carries
a great monumental importance.
We
must point out astronomi-cal gadgets, better known as
astronomical observatory, a great collection of ancient
arms, a great amount of ancient clocks and the especially
rich library with lots of manuscripts that are still
unta-ckled, written in Croatian Cyrillic.

THE
DRAGONS CAVE
and
the relieves in it are first class monuments from the
cave life of Glagolitic priests. The time of its originating
is still the eni-gma. Some 200 m above Murvica, this
cave served as a residence and the temple of the fugitive
Glagolitics who inhabited and cultivated the steep cliffs
of the southern part of the island, and established
their monk life.
The
Dragon’s Cave is 20 m long. Three partition walls make
four separated “halls”. The sides of the cave are decorated
by the relieves. Most of the relieves represent the
fight between right and wrong.

SELCA
is
a small settlement in the inland of Braè. It
is the econo-mical basis of agriculture, olive growing,
fruit growing and stone carving (some stone-pits are
near the settlement). In the area arou-nd the settlement,
up on the hill Hum, there are still traces of prehistorical
hill-fort and tumulus.
In
monumental parish house there is a statue of Christ,
a masterpiece of Ivan Meštoroviæ, one of
the most famous Croatian sculptors; in the garden there
are monuments of L.N. Tolstoj (the work of art of Czech
sculptor Jaroslav Bard, from 1913), a statue of Stjepan
Radiæ (made by A. Augustinèiæ), a
statue of a German politician H.D. Gensche-re, (author
is Jose Gomes, in 1994), and the statue of Pope John
Paul II (made by K. Kovaèiæ in 1995).
